Description
Make the first cut of the central stem at almost ground level, just above the lowest two to three side shoots. Make future cuts at the stem base.
Harvest when the first 2-4 bells on a stem are open, great vase life.
A cool-season hardy annual, winter hardy to zone 5, prefers full sun.Transplanting is recommended. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting date. Do not cover seeds with soil. Allow 14-21 days to germinate. Space plants 9-12” apart in the garden.120-140 days to bloom.
Provide good winter drainage to avoid crown rot diseases and overwintering losses.
They are easy to transplant, and can be moved even when growth is lush in spring.
These plants prefer evenly moist soil, so be sure to water if the ground becomes dry. About an inch of water per week, but more may be necessary during particularly dry spells.
I start transplants later summer to plant out, get established before winter comes, for blooms the following year.
