Amaranthus caudatus gibbosus
Claret red  heirloom with Mexican roots. Wooly-textured knotted ropes drape dramatically to the ground.  Dreadlocks debuted in 1881 seed catalogs.
The stunning, large textural stems make wonderful addition to large arrangements and the side shoots are smaller, great for bouquets. Excellent for fresh or dried use.

Description

They develop fully in the summer months & revel in heat and humidity.  A productive summer/early autumn filler & stunning in the cutting garden and border.

Annual (will self sow here Zone 5), Size: 3-5′ h x 2-3′ w,  Full sun, well-drained soil,  blooms Summer to fall, Seed to Bloom: 12 weeks,  Burgundy red cascading flowers,Plant spacing: 12”, Pinch when 12” tall

Start seed indoors in trays 4-6 weeks before last frost; transplant out after all danger of frost has passed. Amaranth can also be direct seeded into the garden once all danger of frost has passed. They also self seed here.

Harvest when seed heads are about ¾ of the way open. Remove most of the foliage so the colourful spikes are more visible. Expect a vase life of 7-10 days.
