Description
Such a unique plant! Great in the garden or as a stunning classic ‘filler’ in beautiful bouquets!
Choose a position in full sun on any well drained soil 1/4″ deep. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 14-30 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 40cm (16″) apart.
Indoor seeding: Seed can be sown indoors from March to May at a temperature of 15-29C (59-84F) A place where the temp swings from 70 (21 C)daytime to 60 (15 C) nighttime is perfect. Sow your plug tray 2 seeds to the cell, slip it into a clear plastic garbage bag or put a dome on it. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. Very cold tolerant – plant out as soon as soil can be worked. (Will self sow in warmer areas. In mild areas seeds can be sown directly into the garden in fall). Outdoor Seeding: Here in Zone 5 can be direct seeded into the garden 6 weeks before last frost.
Flower farmers – plant 2 successions to keep stocked with this beautiful workhorse! For an extended harvest, sow successions of seeds every 2-3 weeks. Harvest when flowers are fully open otherwise they have a tendency to wilt. Fresh flowers last an incredibly long time in the vase with or without flower food for 7-10 days.
