Annual low maintenance plant – very easy to grow – great for beginner gardeners! African marigold with masses of unusual, single, 5cm,brightly striped striking blooms, alternating red and orange shades. Not an old variety by all accounts??, but lovely and open pollinated. Irresistible to butterflies and bees!
By the end of summer you will have a very tall (3 – 4′ plant covered in blooms!)
Seeds can be started 4-6 weeks before the expected date of the last frost in your area if you want to get those blooms started asap. Marigolds are a fun and easy seed, as they germinate quickly and with seeds so easy to handle they are frequently used in gardening programs for children or the elderly.
A layer of organic mulch between marigold plants will discourage weeds and help keep soil moist. I find blooms more prolific and plants bushier with organically amended soil but not over rich.
Days to Germination: 4-10 Blooms: Early summer to frost
