Description

A member of the pea family, Lupines are a wonderful old-fashioned flower, with spires of blue, yellow, pink, purple, white, peach and bicolours..  Although they are perennials, lupines are in the class of short-lived perennials. They put all their energy into those magnificent flower stalks and wear themselves out in the effort. Lupinus, commonly known as lupin or lupine, is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. These members of the Legume family are beautiful additions to any perennial garden.

Due to their ability to enrich the soil with nitrogen, they can be planted in the poorest of soil and thrive.  Average soil is best for growing lupines. Utilize this trait and plant lupines in areas of the landscape that have not been composted or amended in other ways.

Easy to grow, lupine thrives in cool, moist locations. It prefers full sun to light shade and average soils, but will tolerate sandy, dry soil. (and do so very well here) Plants develop long taproots, so generally do not withstand transplanting. They do not grow well in clay.

Deadhead spent blooms for returning lupine flowers.

Sow lupine seeds outside as soon as the soil is workable. There is no need to wait until after the danger of frost has passed, or in the fall so winter can work its magic on the seed coats. Sow in the fall in a cold frame, or, in the spring, try pouring hot water over seeds and letting them soak warm for up to three days until they swell, then sow cool.
