Description
a.k.a. the “Garbanzo pea of the North”
A pea to substitute chickpeas for climates where it is difficult to grow chickpeas because of short springs and hot summers. Makes delicious hummus, curries, you name it! These peas hold their shape after cooking just like chickpeas,
This seed originates in the Ukraine, a very productive, highly flavoured soup pea that produces large round golden peas on white flowers. EXTREMELY RARE.
85-90 days, Dry pea. Vines reach 5’ and yield well.
Sow 1-6″ apart as soon as the ground can be worked in spring when soil temperature is at least 10-15 C. Plant 1/2 – 1″ deep at the base of a support as vines grow tall. Heat sensitive and more productive when planted earlier.
approx 25 seeds per packet
Brenda Kerton –
We had been growing chickpeas but they were not very productive in our space. For the 2024 season we tried these peas. We got 3x the production in 1/4 the space as they grow vertically and as abundantly as most peas. They are super easy to grow, harvest and store. I’ve now tested out the ‘garbanzo of the North’ as a hummus and it’s perfect. Dried they look like chickpeas and cooked they taste like chickpeas. A definite must grow every year!
