Description
PRUDENS PURPLE : A personal favourite! If I had to choose one tomato this would be it, grown here for many seasons, it never disappoints. It’s not purple, but rather a deep red-pink, solid meat beefsteak type with exceptional taste! Plants produce good yields of firm, very delicious tomatoes, with few seeds. Described as silky, these are perfect for anything you may want a tomato for, eating or preserving. Fruits early considering size, which is 1 lb or so. Shows some measure of disease resistance, plants are very healthy. Plants have potato shaped leaves. 75 days somewhat of a compact Indeterminate as it doesn’t seem to outgrow its cage.
According to various SSE descriptions, its development is attributed to an “old woman in Eastern Kentucky” by the name of Mrs. Pruden. The early “want listings” describe a fruit that can be huge (up to five pounds each), and of a deep purple, almost black color. However, all instances of what has been offered to date are potato leaf, pink fruits which, in 19th century tomato terminology, “purple” always referred to what we now call pink.
