Description

Tracing their roots to the old fashioned field peas that sustained northern Europeans long ago, hearty, delicious Swedish Reds earn their place in today’s gardens. Unusual claret-coloured seeds turn chocolate brown on cooking. Vines climb to 7 feet and more yield a modest amount of short pods.

Beautiful bi-colour flowers give way to plump pods holding 5-6 large deep red peas. Dried, the peas are excellent pantry staples for soup, stews, casseroles etc

Peas love a crowd, sow 1-6″ apart along as soon as the ground can be worked in spring. Plant 1″ deep at the base of a trellis such as a fence or net strung between two posts as vines grow tall. Heat sensitive and more productive when planted earlier. Allow pods to ripen and dry down on the plant.

Harvested in mid August, here in Zone 5 Ontario, these peas matured later than other soup varieties, flowering long after other pea varieties have ceased, so very handy for flowers, tendrils and greens.

120 days to dry,

Grown organically but not certified.
