Description
The stunning, large textural stems make wonderful addition to large arrangements. Side shoots are smaller, great for bouquets, pinch for smaller blooms. Excellent for fresh or dried use. Leaves & seeds are edible! In India stems are eaten; leaves boiled in water and mixed with salt and chili powder. An anti-famine plant. Poductive summer/early autumn filler. Annual, 40 to 45″, full sun, days to maturity: 65 – 75 days, spacing: 12″, pinch: when 12″ tall, vase life: 7-10 days
Surface sow, lightly press into soil. Start seed indoors 4 – 6 weeks before last frost; transplant out after all danger of frost has passed. The genus name Amaranthus is derived from amarantos, a Greek word that means unfading. This is referring to the long life of the flowers.
