The pleated blooms pirouette gracefully at the ends of the wiry stems.  One of the most ephemeral and delicate flowers that I grow, Shirley poppies steal the hearts of everyone who visits our garden. Pollinators love them!

Best in drifts, and so easy to grow, just plant when the spring weather is still cool, and frost is possible.  One plant will produce flower heads for up to 6 glorious weeks, and as each blossom fades it leaves behind the most beautiful miniature seed pods that make amazing additions to boutonnieres and dried creations.

Annual, Height: 24-30”, full sun, Days to maturity: 55-65 days, Plant spacing: 9-12”, 1.5-2′ h. Pinch: not necessary

Shirley poppies resent transplanting. Direct sow. Can be started indoors, just take care when planting out not to disturb the roots too much. See my blog post all about poppies!

Harvesting/Vase Life:
The flowers are short lived, lasting 3-4 days if stem ends are seared 7-10 seconds. Perfect for personal use or event work. Harvest when flowers are just opening.

Long blooming spectacular plant that grows 3- 5', (152 cm) grabbing attention in the garden. It is also an excellent cut flower, the larger branches can be cut into smaller ones if desired. Absolutely stunning food plant! Seeds are edible and can be popped. Flower heads appear in late summer, producing approx. 50,000 seeds that are used like a cereal grain, milled into a gluten-free flour or cooked whole and eaten in place of rice and oatmeal. (Cucumis sativus)The most delicious crunchy cucumber I've eaten!  The sweeter, smoother little sister of Silver Slicer, Salt & Pepper has Powdery Mildew as well as Angular Leaf Spot resistance, best suited for eating fresh and pickling. Small, squat, and cylindrical, roughly 7-12 cm long. Its outer skin is thin and white (pale green) with bumps and black spikes.
