Wrinkled Crinkled is not only a fun to say, farm-bred variety from breeder Frank Morton but beautiful, useful AND delicious with multiple cuttings possible. According to Frank, “From a cross between ‘Persian’ and ‘Curly’ cress, the leaves of this unique type are held erect for easy cutting and cleaner product. The twisted, crisped, and savoyed texture give these leaves unexpected heft and toothsomeness for a little garden cress.”
Harvest for floral use after the top blooms and seeds are formed all the way to the tip. Expect a vase life of 10 days. To dry, hang upside down in a warm, dry place until firm.
A cool season annual, It grows well in containers, and is excellent on a sunny windowsill in the kitchen for easy access. The baby leaves can be harvested as soon as the true leaves appear if grown for sprouts .Excellent sown as baby greens, the ruffled verdant leaves provide quite a taste bud wake-up call; marvellous in salads, sandwiches or garnishes and lends its pungent personality to Szechuan-inspired stir-fries. Garden cress is an entirely different variety than Watercress (Nasturtium officinale).
Direct seed as soon as ground can be worked, staggering plantings every 2 weeks for an extended harvest, and again in the fall. Sow shallowly. Plant in rows 8” to 10” apart if growing to maturity.Begin harvest in 7-10 days when 2″ tall. Cut 2” from the base to allow several harvests. (or let grow to harvest the seed heads for floral work) Sow every 2 weeks for a steady supply.
