Description
Forms a large rosette at the ground in the first year, followed by flowers in the second. Generally acts as a self-seeding biennial. Flower stems grow to 5′ (152 cm) x 18″ (45cm) wide. RHS winner. Short-lived perennial, may be treated as a biennial, Zone: 4,5,6,7,8,

Prefers part shade to sun and well-drained, moist garden loam enriched with organic matter.
Native to Europe, Turkey & Lebanon , documented to the 16th century in the early British herbals of Parkinson and Gerard. While there is no direct evidence that Thomas Jefferson cultivated this species, it was available on an 1810 broadsheet of Philadelphia nurseryman Bernard McMahon as well as in his book, The American Gardener’s Calendar 1806, under the common name ‘Iron-coloured Fox-glove’.
Surface sow seeds from late spring to early summer, plant out at least 6 weeks before your first autumn frost.
Sprout Time: 7-20 days tarting Outdoors: After last spring frost until early summer. Will bloom the following year. Harvest early when just a few blossoms are open. Expect a vase life of 6-8 days if flower preservative is used.
