Description

Digitalis purpurea Heywoodii  ‘Silver Fox’ has soft, touchable felted leaves and spires of clustered thimble-shaped flowers in dewy pink and cream, with “beauty spots” scattered within. Nectar-rich florets are irresistible to bees. Late spring to summer bloom.

This remarkable variety has silver felted leaves that deer avoid, while bees are regular visitors.  Avoid locations that are wet in the winter.

The genus name Digitalis comes from the Latin digitus, meaning finger, in reference the flower shape—their appearance is similar to that of the tips of a glove.

Biennial to short-lived perennial Zone: 4,5,6,7,8,9, Size: 2-2.5′ h x 1′ w,  Full sun to partial shade,  Regular to rich, moist, well-drained, Final Spacing: 1-1.5′

Sow seeds from late spring to early summer and plant seedlings in the garden at least 6 weeks before your first autumn frost. Plants will winter over in the garden and bloom the following spring. Surface sow and press in lightly; requires light to germinate.
Starting Indoors: 10-12 weeks before last frost
Starting Outdoors: After last spring frost, surface sow in a location with full sun to part shade (especially in very hot locations). Will bloom the following year.

The trick to getting the longest vase life from foxglove is to cut it before the bees find it as pollinated blooms drop from the stems, so  harvest early when just a few blossoms are open. Expect a vase life of 6-8 days if flower preservative is used.

*All parts of the plants are poisonous if ingested. Wear gloves when harvesting and use caution around children and pets. The purchaser assumes all liability relating to the use of this product. I have personally never taken precautions working with digitalis but I sure do not eat it!

the seed is very very tiny
