A few years back I purchased Cafe au Lait. I did not realize the blooms were much smaller than what others were growing as CAL. Turns out this little gem is what some are calling Cafe au Lait MINI ! Who knew? shes gorgeous! this is a happy ‘mistake’ 😉

Cafe au Lait has become perhaps the most widely known name in dahlias for its use in wedding work. Its subtle mocha with pink tones 4 – 4.5″ flower blends so perfectly in bouquets and its soft shape makes it so easy to work with.

I find it so useful in floral design as a smaller version of the huge blooms, same huge leaves, smaller blooms. See video of arrangement. (see below for more info)

Description

Another known attribute of Cafe is the differences in colour tones you’ll find from one to another. What’s not to love? Warm mocha to deep creams, pastel dreams of pink, hints of white and sometimes some raspberry swirls. It is a bit of an unstable colour but thats an endearing quirk.

So much more useful for design work IMO, lasting longer than the huge blowsy blooms and totally gorgeous in bouquets!

CAL are not very floriferous, (they do not have a LOT of blooms), compared to some other varieties, but they are priceless. Perfection.

I was excited to see this bloom - the big buds burst into strong 5-6” creamy yellow-white semi-cactus masterpieces! One of my favourites this year.

Great cut flower. Won award of merit in Melbourne in 2021. Won best in class many times in recent years.
